We were honored to have Los Angeles based Artist, Spencer “MAR” Guilburt perform a live demo during Blick Superhero Madness in West Lost Angeles on Thursday September 26, 2013. Noon-4pm. With 500+ people in attendance this was one of Blick’s largest event turnouts to date!

Blick Art Materials | 11531 Santa Monica Blvd. | Los Angeles, CA 90025

About MAR:
“Born and raised in California, MAR has lived in many locations throughout the Los Angeles region. MAR was created from the sea. As a life-long surfer, you can understand why he took up the Spanish word for the ‘sea’ as his moniker of choice. MAR first received serious public attention in 2010 through his street art. His hand-drawn marker pieces can be seen adorning buildings, walls, utility oxes and light posts around the city. Each piece was a juxtaposition of the delicate female form and the harsh urban environment around it. The public embraced MAR’s street art, and with the rise of street art, so too went MAR.” – Spencer “MAR” Guilburt

Please join us Saturday, Aug 3rd at Blick Art Materials in Schaumburg, IL for a live art show, by artists Jay Turner and Sukka (aka Dennis Quijano) from Paper Crown Gallery.

“One of those kids that loved to draw…day and night since he was 3. He is an alumni of The Illinois Institute of Art – Schaumburg with professional experience in illustration, package design, and brand development. Most of his personal work specializes in portraits, but still finds ways to switch it up a bit and keep an open mind. Jay works with mostly spray paint, acrylic, india ink, and charcoal but experiments with all mediums in a variety of techniques.” – Jay Turner

“Art is ever changing and evolving, just like humans.” Born in Chicago, Dennis Quijano began his art influences once he could see the world. After receiving a degree at The Illinois Institute of Art with a major in media arts, Dennis began using his artistic skills in the corporate world, taught multimedia for several years and also became involved in small businesses that would allow him to express his artistic talents. But at the end of the day, it always came back to the fine arts…no computers, no keyboards, no software, no mouse. Drawing and painting are the foundation of this artists work, mentally taking creative ideas and converting them into visual works to share. His love for cartoons, music and pop culture mainly became the subject matter. “I find the subject matter and the way it’s represented, can mean deeper than words. I like to look at everything as a perspective and what is more important than sharing your perspective on life”. – Sukka aka Dennis Quijano

For Immediate Release:

On July 18th, 2013 Detroiters came together and completed a mural together just hours after the announcement of Detroit’s bankruptcy. The preparations began with the creation of a black and white mural titled “Speramus Meliora; Resurget Cineribus” which is the motto of Detroit city and translated from latin it means, “we hope for better things; it will arise from the ashes”. In this work, the artist “icon” envisioned the city’s spirit and motto through black lines and white space. Black, is used by icon to represent the presence of all (color) and white being the absence of. This duality is characteristic of life and death, the way the world sees our city and the way we see it. Those who spend even a week in Detroit are hard pressed not to find the spirit of innovation, resilience, perseverance and become moved by the people and the city’s renaissance.

On the opposite side of the very same wall another mural was created by the hands of Detroiters.   A diverse group of visitors, side by side, painted their names on the Dequindre Cut, using Plutonium™ Paint.  The Dequindre Cut is a path and public art space, which was once a part of the Grand Trunk Railroad line, and is one of the nation’s finest greenways that connects the riverfront to the famous Eastern Market.

These Detroiters, who were guests of Riviere28’s (a group within the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy dedicated to creating inviting experiences on the riverfront and Dequindre Cut for active young professionals who live, work or play in the City of Detroit) Soiree on the Greenway Event, wrote the names of Detroiters past, present and in spirit on that wall to create an interwoven layer of color signifying the presence, power and impact of the individual.

After the people had left their mark, the masked off portions of the wall were peeled back to reveal the message “WE ARE DETROIT”. The individual people, and their array of colorful lines made the whole. The mural was a reminder that Detroit is what we make it. With the completion of this mural, Speramus Meliora; Resurget Cineribus was complete. The city’s motto and the spirit of Detroit is comprised of individuals who come together to celebrate the past, embrace the present and create the future. July 18, 2013 will be remembered in Detroit’s history as a pivotal point it it’s renaissance, and these murals are a reminder that we are the city’s hope, it’s power, it’s creativity, it’s passion, and it’s future.

These murals were created by icon, a Detroit artist, and curated by Street Culture Mash for the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy, Riviere28’s Soiree on the Greenway and paint for We Are Detroit was provided by Plutonium™ Paint.

Armed with Plutonium™ Paint, Jason Castro was cordially invited by London based contemporary artist Reza Aramesh to customize 5 plinths confronting assumptions of sex, violence, and culture for his most recent series – 12 Midnight – on view to the public in 5 clubs throughout New York City (Bossa Nova, No.8, Santos Party House, Marquee, and Sugarland). May 8 – June 5, 2013.

“..for Aramesh the plinth is likewise a bearer not just of weight, but also of meaning, both aesthetic and iconographic.”
– Dr. Geraldine A. Johnson, Professor of Art History at Oxford University.

Forced to view the 360 degree works through peep holes, Castros plinths support the ambiguity of the sculptures they conjoin, questioning sentiments of power during this starkly vast turning point in human history. Fighting back with a full can of Plutonium™ Paint, Castro quickly pulls these pillars of hope up from the rubble, redefining the peepshow for an internet age.

After winning a Facebook ‘Like’ Contest sponsored by Amanda Harris Gallery of Contemporary Art (Las Vegas, NV), street artist Mowgli makes his gallery debut during February First Friday. The one-day show will feature murals and his portraiture. A collaborative wall will include artists Dead Girls and Robots, jesusismycurseword, mfntimebomb, Drips18, Chi, and the Vegas legend Juan Muniz. The food trucks Dragon Grille and Joe2Go will be in attendance with DJ Taylor C spinning on site to support the show. Cocktails will be available through Lady Silvia for those 21 and over. Also, F2esh Clothing Company and The Downtown Hanger Project will also be present to support the event. There will be giveaways throughout the night from F2esh Clothing Company, 9th Life Clothing, and Mrs. Rocket Tattoo.

Mowgli takes inspiration from pop culture, other artists, girls he’s dated and his father’s disapproval. “Realistically, I would love to call the show ‘sh*t I like’ because of the straightforward nature of my art,” says Mowgli. “Most of the commissioned pieces reference my pop culture interests.” The actual name, “Spray Paint and Whiskey,” is a play on this idea.

He believes art is for everyone and takes an active interest in making his art affordable to the masses. “Art should not depend on your socioeconomic status,” Mowgli says. His aspirations include giving back to the community to stay true to his artistic intentions. A portion of the proceeds generated from gallery sales and any flat donations will be given to support the Special Olympics of Nevada.

Spray Paint and Whiskey“, sponsored by Plutonium™ Paint and sponsored in part with Odessa Magazine will be held at 900 S. Las Vegas Blvd. #150 Las Vegas 89101 – inside Soho Lofts, next to the Lady Silvia Friday, February 1st from 6-10 pm. For more information on the show, contact Amanda Harris Gallery at 702-769-6036 .
